THE ELECTION FOR THE GREY.

From a slip of the Colonist we copy the following : — Greymouth, 4th June. Mr. Franklyn has withdrawn from the contest for the Grey district election for the Provincial Council. He announced in this morning's Argus that it is not his intention to go to the poll. He has commenced business at Ahaura, as auctioneer and miners' advocate. Mr. Wilkie will therefore walk over. For the Assembly the feeling is not so unanimous in favor of Mr. Kynnersley as was at first supposed, but he can carry the district easy if he comes down.

We learn that a letter has been received in Wellington, from Father O'Reilly— so well known both here and in other parts of New Zealand — which states that the reverend gentleman is now in Rome, and intends visiting Ireland shortly. , He will remain tbr^e a short time, and may be expected he." again in about ten or twelve months. — Wellington Post.

The Wairatj Goldfield. — The news received from the diggings to-day are most favorable, and certainly exceed the expectations of most people. Inspector Emerson, who returned to Blenheim to-day, informs us that many parties are doing well and others are most hopeful. A nugget, weighing 1 ounce 7 dwts, has been found by a man named Dorreen. Pike and Co., a party of four, obtained 1 ouuce 10 dwts in a day and a half. Fadden and Co., 1 ounce in one day, but they have not yet fairly set to work. From Smart and Co's claim 5 ouuces .11 dwts had been obtained in a day and ahalf. A man named George Jones, it is said, offered a wagon, three horses and harness, valued at £140, for a share in this claim. — Marlborough News, Jnne 1.
