Me. EI. <J. L. Auguarde quotes Perseverance shares, £1 10s. paid, at £2 ss. per share ; Commercial shares, £15 paid, at £10 per share. Business done this day. Caution. — We bave been requested to caution the public against a woman of the name of Amy Hulford, who has been reported to the police as having been guilty of obtaining small quantities of goods under false pretences from various storekeepers and others. She gives out that she bas been sent to tbe shop as the servant of some one or another wellknown citizen, ami has in several instances been successful in obtaining what she asked for. She was brought up at the Resident Magistrate's Court this mormiug charged with luvincj obtained meat from Mr. Pratt, but as prosecutor did not appear she was discharged. Manuka. — Iv the Argus of the Hth iustant, we find the following which may prove interesting to our sporting men : — " A considerable amount of betting has been dove on the next Melbourne Cup, and iv doubles on the Cup and Sydney Metropolitan. For the former, Manuka is the favorite, in spite of his going wrong in his last Cup preparation. He has been backed to a considerable extent, tbe public having every confidence in the ability of his present trainer to bring him fit to the post. He has been taken at 500 to 20, but the present price is about 100 to sor 6. CroydoD, the second favorite, has been takeu at 500 to 15." The Message and the Messenger. — The Nelson correspondent of the Westport Times, thus narrates the delivery lof the " Conciliation " Message to the | Speaker: — "Before Councillors had settled themselves into their seats came the announcement * A message from his Honor the Superintendent,' and the usual answer * Admit the messeuger,' wbo, let me tell you, is not the 'white-livered loon' who usually comes upon the stage with dishevelled hair aud dirty boots, beariDg a desspatch consisting of half-a-yard of paper in red tape and sealing-wax, but a gentleman of a mild yet dignified aspect, who bows to tbe Speaker, and smilingly retires witb an expression which seems to mean •Put that in your pipes, and smoke it, my hearties.' "
