NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.
Friday, Mat 20. Present :. Messrs. D. Burns (chairman), Black, Webb, Burn, Dodson, and Haddow. ; HAEDY-STREET NUISANCE. The Surveyor reported that he hcd taken levels at the culvert ia Nik-streL,, and at that in Hardy-street, and found tha fall to be 4 feet. Mr. Black then proposed that a ditch be cut through some private ground ia order to abate the above nuisance. Mr. Burst thought the Board were not called upon to expend the public funds ia making ditches through private property ; and besides, the ditch proposed would not abate the nuisauce, add as the Board had in preparation a comprehensive system o? drainage for that portion of the town, he thought it would be waste of money to do anything at. present. MrV Black said that it was in the power.of the Board to abate the nuisance, and it was their duty to do so at once, and if they failed in doing' so they would be guilty of inconsistency and gross injustice to the public. Mr..WEEB said if this ditch were made, anybody might apply to havje their pioperly drained at the public expense. A petition from the owners of property in Hardy-street, received in 1857, stating their willingness to be specially rated for the[ purpose of the construction of a brick culvert, was read, and the Secretary stated that there was another petition to the same effect prepared, from more than, two-thirds of the inhabitants of Waimeastreet. After some further discussion, Mr. Black withdrew his motion. DITCH ACROSS MUDFLAT. S Mr. Black stated that he had applied for leave to one of the owners of the sectious through which he wished the drain to pass, and that he had declined to allow it to be done. Mr. Black proposed that. the Surveyor be instructed to prepare pl : ans and specifications, for the aboveVork.
