The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, MAY 3, 1870.

The Provincial Council, which has now been in session a week, resumes its sittings this evening. There is however nothing on the Notice Paper calculated to give rise to much discussion. From the number of Select Committees already^ appointed, or to be moved for, and the masses of Returns and Correspondence demanded, there seems every reason to believe that the session will be a protracted one, and that the three weeks which some of the members- fondly hoped would terminate their labours, will be drawn out to six or eight at the very least. One of the Committees to be appointed to night is likely to prove a most serviceable one, namely, that moved for by Mr. O'Conor to enquire into and report upon i the most practicable means of developing the Mount Rochfort coal-mine. This is a subject full of interest to the province at large, and it is to be hoped that the Committee will spare no pains in procuring evidence and furnishing the Council with such a full and comprehensive report as may have the effect of leading to the systematic working of this valuable property. A Committee to be moved for by Mr. G-ibbs is likely, if full justice be done to the subjects with which it is to deal, to be fully employed for the remainder of the session, its proposed duties being to take into consideration and report upon the returns, reports, correspondence, &c, sent down to the Council by the Superintendent, and as these papers are this year unusually numerous and voluminous it follows that a Committee undertaking to report fully upon them will have no light task to perform. The reply to the Superintendent's address is to be brought up for adoption this evening, but, as it does not afford much scope for discussion it will, in all probability, be passed without any fur- 1 ther remarks than such as may be called forth by the peculiarities of its composition. The reports of some of the Committees will be brought up to-morrow or next day, and not until then will the real work of the Council begin.
