Extension of the Telegraph. — We are requested to state that a telegraph office has this day been opened for general business purposes, at Patea, iv the Province of Taranaki. Bakqe Hera..— lt will be seen by our advertising columns that the sale of the cargo aud hull of the barque Hera will take place at Blenheim next Thursday. A capital opportunity is afforded intending purchasers by the Ahuriri leaving for Pictou this evening, at 8 o'clock. This boat will be in time to catch the steamer Osprey, which, we see by the Marlborough Express, leaves Blenheim for the wreck at Port Underwood on Wednesday morning, at 6 o'clock. Fire at Marlborough. — An inquest has been held upon the fire by which Mr. ; Brindle's stacks were destroyed some few days ago, and a verdict returned to the effect that, it was the work of an incendiary, i Alarm in Auckland. — The following requisition to the Superintendent is in course of signature in Auckland: — Sir: In view of the present state of native affairs, and the position of the town and province of Auckland, we beg that you will call a public meeting of the citizens for an early day, in order that some adequate means of public protection may be devised. Reported Massacre at OPEPE.-From our late Auckland file we learn that the information which reached us a few days ago of the murder of a number of women and children by Te Kooti was incorrect. Two Arawas were shot, and the women and children iv the pa were taken prisoners, most probably, it is suggested, voluutary oucs, as they were half Hauhaus, but amongst them were the wife and two children of a settler of Opotiki, formerly an officer of tho Ist Waikatos.
Mr. John Williamson, M.H.R., has received the appointment of Commissioner of Crowe Lands for the province of Auckland under the Crown Lauds Act of the General Assembly of last session.
