The Provincial Government of Canterbury are taking active measures for commencing the erection of a female gaol, the money for which was voted during the last session of the Provincial Council, amounting to £1500, - The Wairarapa Mercury says : — We hear of one lot of sheep which were boiled down at the Berhampore station realising 10s. per head, and some at Featherston lis. 6d. each. The settlers have at last obtaiued some knowledge of the value of their stock, and will not be slow to take advantage of it. Amongst the passengers by theMatoaka was the late minister of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Christchurch, the Rev. Mr. Grant, who with his family sailed from Lyttelton for England iu that ship. Yesterday, St. Paul's was hung with black, and the service was conducted by the Rev. J. D. Ferguson, of Lyttelton. The rev. gentleman chose for his text— <-" To-day if ye will hear His voice harden not your hearts," and preached an eloquent aud impressive sermon, many of. the congregation being moved to tears. — Canterbury Press, 7th March.
