THE MILL LEAD.
To the Editor of the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir —By giving publicity to the following you will oblige a number of your subscribers, and perhaps procure some alteration in the matter of complaint, viz., the disgraceful state of the mill lead, in Alton-street. Some twelvemonths ago, a numerously signed petition was sent to the Board of Works respectfully soliciting their assistance towards remedying* the evil complained of, and the reply was, that the mill lead would only be allowed to exist on the condition that the present proprietor undertook to keep it in thorough repair. This has never been done aud a walk up that street iu daylight (for it is not safe at any other time) will satisfyany enquiring mind as to the nonfulfilment of the agreement entered into by the proprietor. Accidents are of almost daily occurrence ; a board gave way under my own feet not an hour ago, aud, unless something is done, it is almost a certainty that lives will be lost, and, of course, nobody will be to blame, although complaints aud petitions be made ad libitum. Yours, &c, A Sufferer.
