TAURANGA.
The only news from the East Coast is that oi> the niyht of the 21st February a party of the Piriakus, a so-called neutral hapti, forcibly seized from the house of Mr. Bore), a young native woman of the name of Elizabeth Guernin, the wi.'e of a settler, Mr. John Guernin, who was killed at Whakatane in March last by Te Kooti's natives. This young woman, who is thoroughly civilised in her ways, was taken prisoner at that time and assigned to one of Te Kooti's chiefs. Recently she escaped and made her way to the house of Mr. Borel, a friend of her husband, giving valuable information. It is feared that she has now gone to a cruel death. Colonel McDonnell, with other officers, and three Arawa chiefs arrived at Tauranga on the 24th, en route for Auckland. The Arawa chiefs are going to treat with the Government as to the adoption or rejection of the new principle laid down by the Defence Minister for the effectual capture of Te Kooti and Kereopa with the least possible delay and expense. We hear from a private source that a reward of £3.000 is offered by (he Government for the capture of Te Kooti and Kereopa. — Taranaki News, March 5.
