NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.
Friday, Febrtjaby 11. Present: Messrs. D. Burns (chairman), Hooper, Percy, Black, Webb, and Burn. The minutes of the preceding meeting were read and confirmed. The tender of Andrew Devaney for the work in Hampden-street was accepted.
A deputation of cabmen waited on the Board for information relative to the duties of the Inspector with regard to the cab-stands. Mr? Hooper moved, " That a sub-com-mittee be appointed to cousider the advisability of forming an omnibus stand; such committee to consist of Messrs. Webb, Burn, Black, and the mover; the committee to meet the cab proprietors on Tuesday next at 6 p.m. at the Board room, and report at next meeting of the Board." Agreed to. A letter was received from Jno. Symons, Esq., asking permission to lay tbe steamer Kennedy, for repairs, as close as possible to the sea-wall ou the Haveu-road, below Livick's wharf. Leave granted. The report of the Public Works Committee, as to subscriptions towards the proposed works in Halifax-street, was postponed till next meeting. A letter was received from the inhabitants of Harper-street, asking that the street, which has recently been handed over to the Board, should be made up, so that water-pipes might be laid down. Mr. Webb objected to the principle of receiving unformed streets from private persons. He thought they should be made up by the owners before being handed over to the Board. After some little discussion, the Secretary was instructed to advertise for tenders for the work. A letter from the Fire Brigade was received, asking what amount of money the Board would be prepared to vote tbem this year. The Secretary was instructed to pay the sum of £20 to tbe Brigade. Mr. Percy called the attention of the Board to the state of the ditches in Hardy, Waimea, aud Nile streets, which were in a foul condition, and a great nuisance to the neighborhood. Mr. Webb thought a memorial to the Superintendent ought to be drawn up, asking him to introduce a Bill into the Provincial Council to empower the Board to raise a loan of, say, £4000, on security of the rates, for a period of 20 years, for the purpose of forming a permauent sewer to drain the above streets. It would be a waste of money to do anything less than that. He gave notice of a motion to that effect. Measures for abating the nuisance at present were spoken of, but the subject • was deferred till next Board meeting. Sundry accounts were then passed, and the Board adjourned.
