The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, JANUARY 29, 1870. NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.

1 v I Friday, January 28. Present : — Messrs. J. R. Hooper, J. P. Black, R. Burn, J. Webb, and J. Percy (Chairman). The minutes of tbe preceding meeting were read and confirmed. Mr. Black's motion, that the amount of rate raised in the various districts of the town should be expended within those districts, was withdrawn, in order that it might be brought under discussion at a future time. Mr. Black then proposed, as a preliminary measure to the carrying out of I vhe above mentioned motion, "that all the town properties be rated at per foot frontage." This was postponed till about Juue next, iv order that the subject might be thoroughly discussed. A letter was received from the JProvincial Secretary announcing that Mr. Geo. Harper Lad conveyed to the Superintendent a road 30 feet wide, running from Nile- street-east to Manuka street. Mr. Webb objected to receive the road on account of the expense necessary iv forming it. The other members present thought that the Board would be bound to form the road, because the persons owning property uloug it had been rated at per foot, frontage to that road. The discussion on this point was postponed till a future occasion. The Surveyor brought forward his plans and estimates for certain works in Kawai and Hampden streets. Mr. Burn moved that the Surveyor be instructed to prepare a specification and invite tenders for the alteration and improving of Hanipden-street, from the Waimea-road to Kawai-street. Agreed to. The Surveyor's plans and estimates for the forming of Halifax-street, from the Haven-road to Collingwood-street, were brought forward, and discussed. The consideration of the matter was adjourned till the next Board night, in order that the owners of the property that [ would be benefited by it might be waited upon by the Public Works Committee, to ascertain the amount they were willing to subscribe to meet the grant of £300 from the Provincial Government. The following letter from Mr. T. Dacombe was then read: — "Nelson, Jan. 2B, 1870. "To the Chairman and the Members of the Board of Works. "Gentlemen, — You will oblige if you will allow the water cart to fill the vessels with water on the fete grounds i next Tuesday (necessary for supplying the tea). The difficulty of obtaining water by other means (of so good a quality) will, I trust, avail to shew you the urgency of need for prompting thisrequest. " I am, &c, "Thomas Dacombe." The Board seemed to think that this was rather a novel request, and it was therefore not granted. Sundry accounts were passed and the meeting separated.
