English Mail. — The Mail closes for England to-morrow (Sunday), at 3 p.m. Perseverance Gold, Mining Company. — The whole of the shares offered for sale at auction by Mr. Elliott to-day, were sold, forty-nine at £1 Is., and one at £1 2s. 6d. '-'• Stoke Concert. — This concert came off last night, and on the whole may be said to have proved a success. PA large number of townspeople were present, and a fair sprinkling of residents in the district, though not so many of the latter as we should have wished or expected to see. Not that we desire to convey the impres-

sion that no interest was taken in the concert by thoseliving in the neighbourhood — on the contrary, a very general appreciation of the music was exhibited by a large number of persous who were j congregated outside tlie buildinsr.- True, they did not by purchasing tickets assist in swelling the fund for which the concert . was givon, bnt, then they obtained forms which they placed near the open windows where every note could i>e heard, and in fact displayed the greatest enthusiasm, so far, indeed, was it carried in one instance, that a gentleman, name unknown, who stood near one of the windows, possibly thinking that there was not sufficient instrumental music, would insist upon whistling ao accompaniment to the snnjrs, totally regardless of the fact that, while under the most favorable circumstances there is nothing harmonious in the sounds that issue from apair of parsed up lips, when they are pouring forth notes in a different key to that in which the- song they are accompanying is being rendered, such melody becomes simply unbearable. We trust that the enthusiast to whom we allude will, ou future occasions of a similar nature, have a little more respect for the ears of those who go to a concert to listen to harmony and not discord. Of the performance we shall say but little here, every one did their best, and displayed the utmost good nature, one gentleman, who is wellknown for the excellence of his acting and singing, being encored twice over in one of his comic songs, and responding to the vociferous calls for a repititiou of his song in the most obliging manner. We have not yet heard the amount realised, but there can be no doubt that a handsome little sum will be .placed to the credit of the fund for which thie concert was got up.
