The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1869.
About, to-morrow or Thursday we mayexpect to hear from Wangapeka of the result of Mr. Broad's atteofpt to proceed with the survey, and most anxiously is the news looked for in town. Of course if over 100 men, as it is stated, are determined strenuously to oppose the carrying out of the survey, it would be mere folly on the part of tbe Warden to persist in the attempt with the half dozen or so of men he has now with him, and although he will proceed until he is actually compelled to stop, there can be no doubt that, in the face of such overpowering numbers he will, if they are as determined as is reported to be the case, be unable to carry out his instructions with regard to the survey of the disputed land. The next step to be taken by the Government will therefore be the issuing of warrants for the apprehension of those who are acting in defiance of the law, for it will never do to permit a civilised community to be thrown into a state of anarchy and confusion at the mere caprice of a few discontented men, who have taken upon themselves to assert what shall or shall not be done in a certain district. We trust, however, that matters will not be carried ,to such an extent ; if those now in possession of the land imagine that they have right on their side, the law is open to them as well as to any other of her Majesty's subjects, let them therefore bring their case before the proper tribunal, and there have it finally decided, but by their present conduct they are injuring their own cause, they are persisting in a course which can do them no possible good, and they are giving rise to afeelin^ of indignationamong the more orderly and peaceably disposed of the inhabitants by the delay they are creating in the opening up of a goldfield on which there is abundance of scope for themselves and thouaauds of others to find remunerative, employment.'
