COLLLAGE SPORTS.
The sports at, the College were brought to a termination on Saturday in the presence of a large number of spectators, an additional attrac-f tion. having been provided by the presence of the Volunteer Band which performed on the lawn during the afternoon. The weather was glorious, and the, whole proceedings passed off moat satisfactorily, and the able manner in which the boys acquitted themselves in the various trials of skill and endurance is a matter of congratulation to aU'concerned. Special mention must he - made of the performance of Charles Vickerman, who, in the high jump, cleverly cleared the rope at a height of 4ft. 2in., the little fellow himself measuring only 4ft. 2in. So delighted were the spectators with the boy's success that" a subscription was at once instituted, and he -was presented with a guinea as a mark of their approbation. The prizes forraces Nos. 11 and 12, which were extras, were .£1 each, the money being generously subscribed by some of the passengers of the s.s. Phoebe who were on the ground. One of the most noteworthy features of the proceeding was the kindly feeling that existed among the boys, as was clearly shown by the | fact that the winners of the various events received no more hearty congratulation* on their success than were offered to them by the beaten j competitors. On arriving at the end of the programme the fortunate winners were presented with the prizes by Mrs. Johnston, and we have no hesitation in saying that their value was greatly enhanced by j the few kindly words of encouragement that were addressed by that lady to the smiling boys as she placed ; in their hands the rewards of. their exertions. . - All the prizes having been distributed, three ringing cheers were given for Mrs. Johnston, a similar compliment .was heartily paid to the Rev. F. Simmons, the head master, and three more were given for Judge Johnston who originally instituted the sports which were thus brought to so. satisfactory, a conclusion for the year 1869.
