THE GOORKHAS.
To the Editor of the Nelson Evening Minv. Sir — The following extract from the life of that most excellent man, ; Colonel Mountain, will, I think, possess some, in^ terest for your readers at the present moment. Writing of the Goorkhas/ he says: "A singular race are these conquered conquerors of the mountains; : - they are generally small and dark, and are very active and excellent marksmen. .They must originally have been Tartars, or possibly Chinese, having precisely the same features as the latter nation ; their' conquests, and the. stubborn resistance they made to the British troops are proofs of their activity and energy. A high. opinion is entertained of them in India, where they are preferred to the Sepoys of the plain." ' . ' ' I am, &c, "'■■'■ Old Biggs.
