A petition has been prepared in Otago, and is in course of being signed on the Goldfields, requesting Mr. Yogel to resign his eeat for that district in the General Assembly. — Ghey River Argus. As a proof of the strength of rope made from New Zealand flax, the Southern Cross states that on a recent occasion some very heavy machinery had to be drawn up a hill at the Thames, and a four-inch Manilla rope used snapped like a pack thread. A 2frinch New Zealand rope was then employed, and it stood tho strain without a single strand being injured. It was too, only an ordinary rope, with nothing remarkable about it. Mb. White found' in the village of Sel bourne a universe for observation and instruction; and Parson Crabbe read human life better in a quiet hamlet than most of the great poets have done, in the j wide circles of their large towns. .
