EDUCATION BOARD ELECTION.
The. election of members to fill the vacancies in the Committee of Education for the City of Nelson, caused by the retirement in rotation of Messrs Luckie, Campbell, Davis, and Hill, took place this morning at the Court House at noon, in the presence of an unusually large number of the electors. On the motion of Mr James Hooper, R. Pollock, Esq., J.P., was voted in the chair. The following nominations were then made : — Mr H. Drew, proposed by Mr Webb and seconded by Mr Merrington. Mr J. Percy, proposed by Mr J. Hooper and seconded by Mr J. Webb. Mr Luckie, proposed by Mr Hill and seconded by Mr Percy, Mr H. D. Jackson, proposed by Mr Hibble and seconded by Captain Clouston. Mr B. Crisp, proposed by Mr Barton and seconded by Mr Askew. . Mr D. Sinclair, proposed by Mr Percy and seconded by Mr G-. Blick. Dr. Irvine, proposed by Mr. Nation, and seconded by Mr Everett. Mr I. M. Hill, proposed by Mr Campbell and seconded by Mr Packer. Mr M. Campbell, proposed by Mr Smart and seconded by Mr Austin,
Messrs Greenfield and Sharp having accepted the office of scrutineers, a show of hands was taken for each candidate, with the following results : — Mr Drew, 5; Mr Percy, 40; Mi Luckie, 24; Mr Jackson, 18; Mr Crisp, 6; Mr D. Sinclair, 30; Dr Irvine, 38; Mr Hill 10; and Mr Campbell, 8. Mr Percy, Dr Irvine, and Messrs Sinclair and Luckie were therefore declared duly elected. During the proceedings Mr Daniell, »a member of the present committee, intimated his wish to resign his seat, but it was decided that the resignation was informal, and could not be accepted. After the usual vote of thanks to the chairman, proposed by Mr R. Burn, the meeting separated.
