A very distressing accident occurred yesterday afternoon about 5 o'clock, to a little buy, about 5 years old, the son of Mr Alex. Hunter, jeweller, of Bridge-st. It. seems that the poor little fellow was playing with another child about the Messrs Mou tray aud Barclay's foundry, where the workmen were engaged in casting a large fly-wheel, the blast furnace, which is driven by horse-power, being iu operation, aud he was persuaded by his playmate to climb on to the bar at the opposite side of the large cog-wheel which the horse was turning, and by some accident overbalanced himself, and to save himself from fulling, put his left hand on the wheel, by whieh it was almost iustaniaueously drawn between the cogs, three of which passed through it, macerating it in the most terrible manner. He was immediately released, and taken to Dr Cotterell's, where amputation above the wrist was found absolutely necessary; the entire hand beins» literally smashed aud torn down to the wrist. Tlie operation was performed under the influence of chloroform, and we are glad to learn that tho poor little sufferer, who, we are told, behaved most pluckily throughout, is progressing, so fur, very satisfactorily. The Lady Barkly which arrived from Collingwood yesterday afternoon, brought the unusually large quantity of 260 oz. of gold from that port. Tlie presentation of the testimonial to Dr. Gusack, ou his departure from Nelsou for Wellington took place this moruiug, at the Trafalgar Hotel. A considerable number of his friends were present, and the talver, which is a very haudsome piece of plate, ordered from Duuedin, aud which only arrived by the Gotheuburgh, was presented to Dr. Cusack by the Resi-dent.-'Magistrate, J. Poynter, Esq., on behalf of the subscribers, together with a highly complimentary address, bearing their siguatures. Dr. Cusack acknowledged the testimonial in feeling aud appropriate! terms, and mm ual expressions of good wishes were exchanged and ratified over goblets filled with "the glorious vintago of Champagne."
