We take the following Australian telegrams of news brought by the Goth*»nburgh to Dunedin, under d te of the 24th ui timo from the Evening Post of the 3rd instant: — The general election for members of the Victorian Parliament has concluded, the result being a great majority for fhe Ministry. 21 opposition candidates aud 57 ministerialists returned. Hr Dominick Daly is dead, and a great gloom prevails over Soulh Australia in consequence. The late Governor's funeral hi traded an immense crowd, who paid every lespect ou the solemn occasion. Sir Dominick was much liked by all classes. On the 22nd ult. the river Hunter rose 10 feet i'i five hours, overflowing its banks. Tlie settlers on low lying grounds were compelled to abandon their homes aud seek refuge at Windsor. A vast quantity of pro petty has been destroyed. Two dams at the waterworks gave way. The barque Chelydra was wrecked at Port Stevenson, and one life lost. The brig Esperanza dragged her anchors, and went ashore at Bird Island; lhe captain, his wife, five passengers and crew drowned. The Woodlark wrecked on the Seal Rooks. Portion of a wreck of a French vessel has been washed ashore at Newcastle ; also three schooners. Brig Gratia and barque General Wood supposed to be lost. Fishhook is heavily backed for the Sydney Cup. The Melbourne authorities condemn the action taken by Otago in seuding Garrett, the bank robber, to Victoria. The following news from Melbourne via Dunedin, appears in the Evening Post, of Wednesday : Tne steamer Auckland brings dates from Melbourne to the 27th February. Mr. Robert Heir, actor, died on the passage, and was buried at the Bluff to-day. In the Rokewood murder case, Whtilan was fouud guilty,' and' sentenced to death. Parliament is summoned for the 12th March, when the two Houses join issue ou the Darling Grant./ The Ministerialists number sixty.'". . . The colonial war ship Nelsou being thrown open for visitor-*, large numbers availed themselves of the privilege. J
Burglaries are now very common in Melbourne. An entrance having been effected into Mr Justice Barry's residence, the Judge pursued the thieves. The trials at tha Supreme Court have commenced, hut those connected with the Protestant Hall outrage have been postponed. The civil servants have not been paid, owing to a hitch in the banking arrangements. Great dissatisfaction arises from the stoppage of the public works. The Miuistry possess tiie public confidence. The steamer John Penn has arrived, for the New Zealand cattle tiade.
