The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15, 1868. NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.

Wednesday, January 15,

A special meeting of the Board took place at the Office this morning, at 10 o'clock, forthe purpose of deciding the question ofthe publication of the assessment. Present: Messrs Bentley (in the chair), R, Burn, Webb, D. Burns, Field, and J. Hooper.

Mr James Hooper proposed that the assessment should be published in the Examiner and Colonist newspapers, provided that the cost of printing it does not exceed the amount of £20.

Mr R, Burn moved, as an amendment, that it be published in one newspaper only, to be decided by ballot, the Secretary having announced that the three local journals had declined to do it by tender.

Mr Webb could not find any clause in the Act which laid it down that the assessment should be published in any newspaper, but should merely be left open for public inspection.

The Chairman read the clause in the Act having reference to the question at issue, which enacts that ' in some newspaper or newspapers published or generally circulated in the Province, the chairman of the Board shall cause public notice to be given that the said assessment so made or amended may be inspected at the Ojffice of the Board for the period of 21 dajs, during the usual office hours, by every owner or occupier of property included in such assessment.'

After some discussion, the amendment was put and lost, and the original proposition was carried.

A letter was read from Messrs N. Edwards & Co., giving notice of their intention to appeal against the assessment of various properties belonging to them, amounting to £5600, as being in excess. It was, however, decided that the time for appeal against the assessment having expired, the appeal could not be entertained, and the Secretary was instructed, to communicate the decision to Messrs N. Edwards & Co. This terminated the business of the meeting.
