The Gazette of the 24th instant announces that the following gentlemen have been added to the Commission of the Peace for the colony of New Zealand: — F. Huddleston, G. Bennett, C. F. C. Kelling, H. E. Curtis, and F. C. Tabart, Esquires, of Nelson. The following Volunteer appointments appear in the Gazette of the 24th instant: — Nelson Artillery Volunteers : Albert Pitt, Captain. Nelson Rifle Volunteer Cadet Corps, No. 2 Company: Frederick Guerin, Honorary Captain; William Nicholson, Honorary Lieutenant; Frederick Wither, Honorary Eusign. Motueka Rifle Volunteer Cadet Corps: Edward Fearon Burrell, Honorary Captain; John Bennett Lockett, Honorary Lieutenant ; Charles Herrick Thorpe, Honorary Ensign. We learn that the Cissy, having on board Bishop Suter and the large party of emigrants who accompany him, left the docks for Nelson on the 3rd June, and that she may be expected to arrive here early in September. Amongst the latest items of shipping intelligence received by the Pauama mail we notice the arrival at Southampton, by the Tasmania via Panama, of Mrs McGregor and Mr and Mrs Symonds and four children. Colonial Government Securities appear to have beeu in steady demand for investment in the money market at home. The following are the latest transactions (May 31): — New Zealand 6 per cent. 104|, 105£; do. 5 per cent. 88 J, 89|; do. 6 per cent. 1891, March and September, 103, 164; do. June aud December, 104£, 105h; Queensland 6 per cent. 1884-5, January and July, 93, 95; do. 1891, January and July, 92, 94; South Australian Government 6 "per cent. 1878 and upwards 105, 107; Victoria Government 6 per cent. 1891, January and July, 109 and 1 10; do. April and October, 108, 109. Our readers will perceive that the election of four members of the Board of Works will take place on Monday next afc noon in the Market-place, to fill the vacancies created by the retirement of Messrs Rout, D. Burns, and W. Wright (who are all eligible for re-election), and by the resignation of Mivß. Aitken, who has left Nelson. In addition to the names of intending candidates already nientioned, Messrs J. Webb, Barlow,_jand Gorrie — we
understand that Mr Thomas Field and Mr James Hooper are also likely to be brought forward. It is only fair to state thafc a reference to our reports of the fortnightly meetiugs of the Board during the past year wiil show that the retiring members of the Board have entitled themselves hy their assiduous attendance on those occasions and by their unwearied exertions, to forward the business of the corporation to the favorable regards of the ratepayers. New Zealand does not figure very largely in the list of prize holders in the London Art Union for the present year, but among the fortunate subscribers we find thre of our fellow- townsmen, Dr Squires being entitled to select a work of art of the value of £30, whilst Mr D'Albedyhll, of the Bank of New South Wales, has ob- ' tamed aParian statuette, subject, "A wood nymph," and Mr. John Sharp, the Provincial Treasurer, one of the exquisite busts of the Princess of Wales, which excited so much admiration last year. There was a very spirited competition to-day afc the Laud Office for the town sections at Westport and at the Karamea advertised for sale in the Government Gazette. Upwards of £1 1 OO worth were sold, averaging £40 each, and varying from £100 to £24 per section, one quarter-acre, No. 949, fetching £100. The Karamea sections also brought large prices. ■"/-A meeting of those interested in the erection of a Theatre and Assembly Rooms in tbis city took place last night at the Bank Hotel, Dr Squires iv the chair, when the following Provisional Directors were appointed : — Dr Williams, Captain Fearon, and Messrs Stanton, Akersten, M.P.C., and Everett, to canvass for shareholders and to conduct the general business of the proposed company, until a sufficient number of shares have been taken up to justify the appointment of a permanent Board of Directors. Nine sites were offered for the building, and after careful consideration ifc was resolved that the recommendation of the Provisional Committee should be adopted, and the site in Hardy-street, near the corner of Trafalgar-street, was accordingly decided upon. We are glad to learn that nearly 200 shares have already been taken up.
