Original Poetry.
TO EUGENIE.
Soothly, 'tis a silly fancy, Thus to fret and sigh ; Faint heart never won fair ladye, , "Weeping dims the eye ; Love is sorrow and vexation : Ladye fair, good bye! What care I for smiles and glances, Lavished here and there ; Favours granted for the asking Are not worth a care. ; Ladye mine, thy ways are winning — j But I'll shun the snare. Beauty is a flower that fadeth, Be it ne'er so fair ; Fashion's fancy quickly changeth : Ladye ! have a care. Fading roses die unheeded : Pr'ythee, maid, beware. Farewell, hopes and fears, for ever ; Winsome face, good bye! Other swains may sigh and languish — Warned, in time I'll fly ; Smile or frown, my pretty charmer, Marry, laugh will I. G. B. Nelson, 21st May, ISG7.
