In reference to the subject matter of a letter which appeared in our columns yesterday, complaining of the variation during the two last years in the date of the annual collection of the Town Rate; we find, on referring to the Town Improvement Act, that the assessment should be collected as soon after the Ist of August as possible, the financial year commencing on the Ist of that month, and expiring on the 31st July of the following year. As a general rule, with the exception of the two last years, when, through circumstances over which the Board of Works had no control, it was rendered impracticable, the rates have always been collected during the month of December.
