The Gothenburg left Melbourne on the 27th April, arrived off Hokitika on the 3rd instant landed 280 passengers and 270 tons cargo, and left for Kelson on the 6th instznt, and arrived here yesterday, at 2 p.m. She brings about 14 passengers and a large cargo for this port. She experienced fine -weather and moderate winds throughout. .. The R.M.S.S. Madras, with the outward English and European mails, in. addition to her valuable freight from Sydney, takes over 100,000 ounces of gold, and about 66,000 sovereigns from Melbourne. Her goldand specie freight is worth over £620,000. On the arrival of the City of Hobart yesterday morning, an extensive seizure was made of smuggled tobacco. A suspicion having arisen that smuggled tobacco was frequently being landed from this vessel, ■ Constables Cleary and Shanny were placed to watch her arrival at the Domain, and a short time after the vessel was moored alongside the cattle jetty, a cab drove up and remained waiting under the shadow of the trees. A man was seen to come from the steamer's side, and deposit a large bundle in the ccarb r and return to the jetty to bring back another bundle, which was also safely deposited in the vehicle. The constables then made their appearance and seized the bundles, which were found to contain between two and three c'wt. of smuggled Sydney tobacco. Information was sent to the collector of customs, ami the cab and horses, the property of a cab proprietor named Broughton, driven by a cabman named George Hines, were detained and sent down to Moore's livery stables, the tobacco being taken to the Custom-house vaults. The driver of the cab will be proceeded against in the usual way, and an information will also belaid, we are informed, against a party on board from whom it was stated the tobacco had been received, and who was the hirer of the cab on the occasion. D. C. M'Guire is on .board in charge to see that nothing leaves the vessel until thorough search of the ship has been made. — Hobart Town Mercury, April 23.
