Anti-Conscripts

STILL THEY COME.

A SOCIALIST'S SON

A well-known and esteemed Socialist (who was at the Easter conference and has always been ready for the cause) writes:—

Dear Comrade, —I am writing to inform you that my son Stanley served a term of ten days in Palmerston jail for not paying the tine imposed and reported by The Wohker from the "Foilding Star," no mention of sentence by the press.

Two days before court day a constable was sent down here to see if he would pay the fine; fine not paid. The day following court day the constable agajn appeared with a warrant demanding £3 135., or ten days. The brave lad, lam pleased to say, decided to tako it out. The constable pleaded very hard fey the fine to» be paid, but when he found we were determined he altered his demeanor and informed us that several had taken it out in Palmerston rather than pay the fine, and that a lot were going to jail over it. "Oh," I said, "as far as we know only about 70 hate gone to jail." The constable replied that there were many more than that.

It seems to mc there is a conspiracy of silence observed by the press, the same ns thp.rc is a conspiracy of misrepresentation of happenings at Waihi. The iron heel has made its appearance in Now Zealand with a vengeance; the greatest crime in the history of New Zealand has been perpetrated at Waihi by the plutes and their hirelings. lam filled as much with sorrow as anger to think that members of our class should be such miserable tools and fools as to fight the battle of their and our enemies. If this lateefc happening fails to arouse the workers of New Zealand, then they are to be pitied indeed. —Yours, etc., E. TUNNICLIFF. Via Palmerston North., W© had a note last irionth notifying that C. Lewis had gone to Lytteltflh jail, under the Act. This brings our Roll of Honor up to 72. *

H. H. Foote, literature secretary, P.R.U., Christehurch, Writes: "I am confident that by passive resistance and your fearles paper Wβ frill yet break down this dastardly conspiracy to un» derminc the solidarity of OUr class."
