Payne, M.P.
Accuses Auckland's Trades Council. DEALS WITH HIRELINGS AND SCABS. AUSTRALIA FALSELY ADVISED. Alpha road, Parnell, Auckland, N.Z., July 30, 1912. The Secretary, Trades and Labor Council, Sydney, N.S.W. • Dear Sir, —A few days ago whilst down south I saw in one of our daily papers a paragraph to the effect that you had written to the Auckland Trades and Labor Council for information regarding the Waihi strike, and asking their advice regarding your subscribing to'tho strike funds. The article went on to say that tli:* Auckland Trades ar.d Labor Council had advised you not to subscribe to the funds, as the strike was not warranted and only brought about by rovolntio ■- ary leaders-. For your information I may state that I am an Independent Labor member for the Grey Lynn electorate in the Auckland Province of New Zealand, and I refused to join either the Labor Party or the Socialist Party, because I hoped to do good for both, and to be in a position to try to rccoueil.* both parties in the direction of working together in the common good. It is to mc a very deplorable thing that there should bo enmity between two Labor sections, when cohesion is so urgently needed to bring about muchneeded reforms, and I regret that the Auckland Trades and Labor Council 1 have been so ill-advisod as to carry
sistancc as many of you Australians have already done in connection with the Waihi trouble.—l am, yours sincerely, JOHN PAYNE. Independent Labor Member for Grey Lynn.
