CANTERBURY ENGINE-DRIVERS.

The Canterbury Engine-drivers' Uiwon met the employers before the Conciliation Council on July 23, and arrived at a settlement of it.s demands, the only improvements being an increaso of 6d. per day for first-class stationary engine-drivers and tho inclusion of Labor Day as a holiday. Tho recent awards of Auckland and Otago prevented the union from getting any further increase. Tho Canterbury award for the last five years has provided that men shall be paid ordinary rates for the time occupied in getting up steam. Tho Court in its wisdom would not grant this request to our Auckland friends, but inserted a clause that they should be paid ss. per week' if reqtiircd to do this work, which works out at about 10d. per hour. —F.E.
