FREEZING WORKS AND ALLIED TRADES.
Organiser's Successful Work
In January of this year delegate? ro«rei>enting tho freezing works and allied trades industry met in conference Jn Wellington, and decided to form a Federation anil appoint an organiser to go through the Dominion to urge amalgamation' where there was a luultipliwty of mucus in any ono district, and to form umoes or branches where there were none. . The Executive Council, which is situated in Canterbury, at its first meeting appointed an organiser, who has wist compeleted his tour. He first visited the Wc-liiiigum. centre, where a wnion had just been formed, but not meeting with the assistance that should nave been extended te him, he went fo Masterton. whore a union had also lecn established.. He urged that body to join the Federation, with the result *bat a ballot was taken and the a hBation proposal carried unanimously. The organiser then went into the Hawkes Bay district, and addressed meetings at Puk-i Puki, Te Aloana. and tbe Spit, Subsequently % members attended a special meeting in Hastings. and a vote on the question of joining ihe Federation resulted unanimously in favor. During the organisers visit 100 new members joined this union, and many more promised to join the following pay day. __„■_. The organiser then went te Lisbornc, and addressed meetings at Nelson Bros, and Kaiti Beach. He was well received by the men themselves, but met with opposition from tbe officials ©f the union. Later the union, at a special meeting, decided not te join the Federation. From there the organiser wont to Auckland, and found that district in a very disorganised state. The employees at the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Works, Halliday's Freezing Works, and Southtown Freezing Works all decided to join the West field Chemical Manure Union. A movement is on foot te amalgamate that ituion with the Fcllmongers, Beamsmen and Curriers' Union, under the title of the Auckland Freezing Works and Allied Trades Union. He next visited Waitari, and urged that union te join the Federation, but siembcrs decided against affiliation by ballot. He then visited Castle Cliff Freezing Works, at which there is a branch of tlio Wellington Union, and urged the claims of tho Federation. Tbe meeting was well attended, those present being in favor of their union affiliating. He next made a call on Patea Freezing Works, and formed a feranch of the Wellington Union, 3o strong. From there the organiser went to the Bluff, where the union is in the Federation. A branch was formed at Iffakaru, about 50 strong. Visited the Mataura branch of the Bluff Union, where 41) new members were enrolled. BVom reports received from Southland, the workers in this industry will soon ftelnug to one union. From Mat-aura the organiser went to Burnside, and succeeded in enrolling a-vor .ol) members in the freezing works industry; these employees previously Ibeloiiged to no union, and have joined the (lingo Chemical yManuro Union, flfhis union, like that at Auckland, Would do well to chang-e its title to embrace all workers in tho industry. The organiser finished his tour at Dniiiaru. where a union had just been formed. This union will join in with Hie Otago Union, as it- is in that district, Tlio Unions in (he Federal ion have (every reason to be proud of flic a mount bl work accomplished this season, and fct only remains for the coming conference to again appoint an organiser fo finish the \vork taken in hand. — F.
