The Hardy Middleman.

HOW TO AVOID HIM.

From Henry 111. of England to the present time is some 7110 years; and for much longer than that the middleman has been out of favor with both producer and consumer. A statute ol Honry recites: "Especially bo it commanded that no forestaller lie suffered to div-ell in any town." It defines a forestaller as "a man who, seeking his own evil gain, goes to meet corn, fish, herrings or other articles for sale as they aro being brought by land or water, carries them off, and contrives that tliey shall be sold at a dearer rate." Such a man, the statute decUros, "is the public enemy of tbe whole community and country. Ha that is (vsnvict thereof tho first t-i tno shall lose the things so bought; the second time ho shall have judgment of the pillory; the third time he shall be imprisoned and make fino. And this judgment shall be given upon all manner of forestall-e-rs;' likow-iso noon those who have given them counsel, help, or favor." The middleman has not only persisted, but in-created and flourished as the green bay tree, until to-day he has practically every industry in. his grip. There is some excuse for the existence of the middleman whe-re the nvanufacturor is not able to get in direct contact with the consumer; but we know of one really important instance in New Zealand where the unorganised buying public has a chance to avoid the* heavy come-between profits of the middleman. We refer to the Crown Chvthing Manufacturing Co., Ltd. This firm of "wholesale manufacturers is the first and only ono in New Zealand to sell direct to the public. A single suit or garment at wholesale price; their specialty being tho CrownalJ Suit. 1.1 is high grade, and for quality, cut, fit and finish, is equal to the b-.st tailor-made, and is only half tho price. Thoy aro made in 40 sizes, one to fit every figure, uideas deformed. If you are not wearing one, ask someone who is, or come iv .and see them. No one pressed to buy. Note tho address:
