Hartley's Work — Anti-conscription— Brieflets. Socialist Organiser Hartley delivered his fourth lecture hi Wellington on Sunday last, when a good audieiioe listened with keen interest to an espositiou of "Socialism and the City." As ono listened to Hartley he could not help wishing that Socialists generally could be brought to recognise the greatness of a civic collectivist spirit, and thus get on a hustle for Socialist municipal action. Edward Hartley's previous lecture on "Socialism aud tho Children" was ono of his best efforts and arrested many a mind concerned with the lot of the children under Socialism, but thoughtless of their lot under capitalism. On Sunday next the Wellington Socialist Party will hold May Day celebrations (with Hartley in command at tho King's Theatre in the eveningV, and on tho following night (Monday, May G) will bring off a social and dance in the Alexandra Hall, Abel Smith street. Tickets: Ladies, Is.; gents., 2s. Tlie Anti-Conscription League is to hold its regular monthly meeting tonight in tho S.P. rooms. The League purposes closely analysing the Defence Act clause by clause at its monthly meetings. There is talk of a debate between Socialist Hartley and Single-Taxer Withy. All militant wage-earners, besides lots of other folk, aro looking forward with keen anticipation to the forthcoming conference of the N.Z.F.L. At the last meeting of the Trades and Labor Council it was decided to recommend Mr. M. J. Reardon's nomination to tho Labor Party as a candidate for the Council vacancy caused by Mr. McLaren's election a3 Mayor.
