DENNISTON DEEDS.
Webb's Visit—Dunn of Lithgow—
Agreement.
Since I last wrote you we have had a visit from tihe President of our Federation, Comrade W«bb, who was welcomed by a large and enthusiastic meeting. Mr. James Scott, President tho Denniston Miners, occupied the hair, and in a few concise, remarks, introduced tho speaker, who gavo a lucid account of tho many sterling works accomplished by tho Federation, more particularly in connection with he recent watersiders' agreement. Our comrado then went on to deal with tho social and cconomio problems which confront the workers of all lands, proving beyond all reasonable doubt that our only hope of emancipation from the thraldom of modern capitalism lies in industrial organisation and political action on a sound, scientific basis. The manner in which ho dea.lt with the local admirers of fako '' Independent Lahorism" was truly edifying. Tho applause which greeted our comrade's exposition indicated tho workers' awakening. The next event worthy of record was the visit of Delegate Dunn-, of, Lithgow, N.S.W., who explained the indignities heaped on the workers in his district. If any fact stood out prominently in our friend's address it was the absolute lack of industrial solidarity in N.S.W., together with the failure .of the pure and simple labor politics: The local "Union voted tho sum of £50 as an absolute grant, and levied themselves to the extent of 5 per cent, of their earnings. • - ; -■
Our late secretary has recently resigned his position to take np a job under the Conscription Act. Mr. L, Diamond was elected in his stead. Ho is a man of whom great things aro expected. Let us hope our expectations will be realised.
During tho we<* our delegates conferrftd with the representatives of the company with a view to arriving at an agreement governing the conditions of employment here. The agreement proved highly unsatisfactory to the j)enniston men, and on Tuesday evening, 14th inst., Mr. John Dowgray journeyed to Denniston. However, tho matter still renrains unsettled. — TOILER.
