MILLERTON MATTERS.
Active Socialist Branch — Against Militarism—Getting Hartley.
Energetic enthusiasm is tho distinguishing feature of the local Socialist branch, and members are determined to bo infect tho rest, of the community with this enthusiasm that tho Milkirbon branch will top the list lor membership. As a remedy for the- distorted news that homo ill-informed individuals hold regarding Socialism, nothing is better than to bring tbem along to the meetings, and educate them to an understanding of true principles. A little insight into these will prove to thorn that Socialism is based on sound economic truthe, and that it will change tho present vicious system of society into one where happmoss will reign instead of misery, and human beings will havo free scope to develop all their highest faculties, instead of being cramped and crushed and forced to sordidly struggle for a mere existence.
No amount of united action on tlie part of tho workers can accomplish a really effective permanent solution of tho industrial problem unless Socialism is tho goal of tho action : and nothing can prevent tho united workers from bringing about this groat revolution tho moment tlsoy unitedly desiro it.
As a variation from their sterner studies, the Socialists here held a social and danoo Inst week. In spito of the stormy weather prevailing, a very enjoyable evening was spent. Tho enthusiastic singing of Socialist songp, especially "Tho Rod Flag," waa a distinctive feature of tho gathering. By tho way, all our meetings begin and ond with a good rousing ol'orus from tho Socialist Song Book, and it sends , everything along with a pood swing.
.At tho last Socialist meeting a strong resolution., moved by Comrade T. S. Williams, and seconded by Comrade J. Me-Konzie, was unanimously carried, protesting against compulsory military training, and calling for a repeal of the Act; also affirming tho prineiplo of the referendum in dealing with vital matters of this kind.
Wo avt> regretfully the vieos of Cnivimilo J. MoKenizio, who is leaving tin , district. Ho has been closely iderail's.-d with the forinntion of this branch. and hi a energetic assistance will be nmcli missed. As ho will pj'Obably bo in Wellington afc tho time of tho Socialist Conference, he has been askf-d to represi.'nt this branch thereat.
A meeting of delegates from the Donniston, Milkrion, and Ngakawau Poeialisfc branches is to Tjo hold in Westporb next week, to consider various matters relating to the more effective organisation of the work in this district. The matter of securing a visit from Comrade Hartley has been left in their hands.—REVEILLE.
