WESTPORT RAILWAYMEN.
Aα overflow meeting of Westport citizens was held in the Town Hall recently to protest against the alleged tyranny of one of the departmental heads of the local railway service. The Mayor (Mr. Greenwood) presided. The tenor of the addresses went to show that the attitude; adopted towards the men by certain officials was such that unrest and irritation were rife in the service. The case of the dismissal of Weeks, an ex-President of the General Laborers' Union, without any reason being fiven, was a particularly sore point, resolution was submitted to th« meeting calling upon the Government to institute an inquiry into the alleged grievances. As a result of addresses delivered before the local branch of the railwaymen, it is understood that every effort will be made by them to induce their comrades elsewherg. to throw in their lot with the N.Z.F.L. Efforts are also being made by tho Westport railwaymen to induce all casuals employed by the department to join the General Laborers' Union.
This agitation against the injustices to which the Westport men have been subjected is primarily due to the efforts of Messrs. Stephenson and Maloney, President and Secretary respectively of the General Laborers' Union.
