MEAT STRIKE SETTLED.

A settlement has been arrived at between the striking meat workers who were employed at Petone and Ngahauranga and the Gear Meat Company and the Wellington Meat Export Company. A protracted conference between the two parties was held, presided over by Mr. P. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner. The terms of the settlement mark a considerable advance upon previous rates, in addition to which preference to unionists has been secured. The freezing chamber hands, with whom the greatest trouble aroso, are to be paid from Is. for handling "warm" carcases to Is. lOd. for overtimo, whilst th© handling of frozen products, which is carried out mostly at night, will be paid at the rate of Is. lOd. all round. According to a statement made by the secretary, Mr. Reardon, the agreement will compare favorably with any in the slaughtering industry in any part of the Dominion.
