AUCKLAND INDUSTRIALISTS.
Tom Barker (Auckland) writes : — The tram way men's demands were; placed before the company, with a fortnight in which to consider them. We have great hopes of getting substantial increases in* .pay, improvement -in our working conditions, and also compulsory preference to unionists. Our .position has been 'enormously strengthened by the splendid victory of the General •Laborers' Union, and- by the militant attitude taken up by Bob Semple and the fighting Federation during .the. subcontracting trouble. "The- Tramway Union were ready at the sound of the word to cease work, and on the Tuesday morning in Auckland the popular inquiry in Queen street shops was : "Are the cars still running?" In fact, when the news went forth that the strike was settled, we felt quite disappointed at not getting an opportunity to show our solidarity. ,Anyway, comrade, the industrial movement has been made in Auckland and the class war is going to be waged to the bitter end. "Worker" sales are going tip wonderfully. Our secretary, Mr. liosser, has suddenly come into line, and at the Grocers' Assistants' Union he advocated the One Big Union. Truly a change of front for an acknowledged Labor misleader! Hβ has admitted that his ideas of the past are obsolete, and hat One Big Union idea is the only way oxit of economic bondage. The strike lias done a power of good for Comrade Savage, and I think City Central is the starting point for the future Socialist Political Fartv.
