SOCIALISTS AND STREET MEETINGS.
As an outcome of the recen.t iivety Dixon street meetings, Bob Hogg and T. A. Eagle, of Wellington braaich N.Z.S.P., appeared before* the Magistrate's Court on September 1 to answer a cbargc of having failed to "move on" when ordered to do so &y tlw. police. Magistrate Riddell imposed a nominal fine of 5s and costs. Adjutant Dunn (Salvation Army), who held a meeting on the opposite corner to the Socialist Party, was fined a similar amount. A further charge against Messrs Hogg and Eagle, that of causing an obstruction in a public place, was withdrawn by the police. It was intimated by the police authorities that they did not wish to interfere with street speaking where it did not entail inconvenience to the public, by causing a blockage of the street traffic, but they wished the public to understand that they had authority to order any street speaker to "move on" if in their opinion he was causing a crowd to congregate and thus obstruct a public thoroughfare.
