"Working the Workers"
THE CHAMPAGNE IUOTS KNCiIN-
KKRI'ID BY MONOPOLISTS (Cable from Paris.)
The agitation in the Valley Marne, believed' at the time to have had for its sole object tha betterment or ths conditions under which the winedressers and kindred associations laboured, are now shown to have been the outcome of an entirely different object. There were five firms of wine merchants who desired to corner the champagne market. This combine it was which engineered the loss of time, and consequent privation which the workers suffered; and the object was to *o handicap, or entirely ruin, those who stood out, that the monopolists would have a clear field for the exploitation of everybody —labourer and purchaser —who "touched, tasted, or handled their vintages. As it is, it is anticipated that, the mice of wine will advance 25 per cent. Tho other vignerons are uniting in •an agitation for an Act by which this iniquitous trust shall be suppressed.
