FORECASTS. FOR NEXT YEAR Will Old Moore —the man who was right about the crisis a year before it happened—do it again in 1939? In Old Moore’s Almanac for 1938, published last year, the crisis and its outcome were foretold with remarkable accuracy. During September, he declared, the planets were in a ‘‘most dangerous position, normally threatening war or an international ■ crisis of the first magnitude, arising with almost incredible and volcanic suddenness. War in Central Europe will be averted only with the greatest difficulty.” ‘‘More peaceful conditions,” further prophesised Old Moore, “will be the outcome of the overtures of the United States Government.” If Old Moore runs to form these arc some of the events that will happen next year, taken from his almanac for 1939: January: An assassination of a leading member of the Government will evoke much unrest in Berlin. February: Secret negotiations concerning the German colonial claims may now be begun. March: An important member of the Opposition may now pass to the Great Beyond. April. The influence of Mars will result in intense military activity —conceivably mobilisation. However, Jupiter should avoid any actual outbreak of hostilities. May: The Government will be worried by a scandal affecting a member and embarrased by the retirement of two of its greatest figures. Possible General Election, with Government returned to power . . . Matters (in Russia) may be further complicated by the eclipse of Stalin. June: Wars and rumours of wars . . . But in the latter part of of the month the international outlook should greatly improve. July; In Japan a more liberal democratic Government. . . Position of Mussolini somewhat precarious. September: Final settlement of at least one war abroad—perhaps to issue in a new, better, happier, and more prosperous era for mankind. November:' Mussolini’s sway will now be rapidly declining. December: Tense diplomatic situations, but war should be averted. Some danger of a clash between U.S.A. and Japan— U.S.A. ’s patience may be strained to breaking point; Russia may be involved. The forecast for Hitler is that at the end of this year, or early in 1939, he will be able to keep his position only with difficulty, and may be superseded by Goering. Mr Chamberlain is tipped to continue Premier till 1941. Eden may be his successor.
