Obituary

MRS H. T. YBECOE We regret to record the death at Cromwell Hospital of Mrs H. T. Vercoe, at the age of 60 years. The late Mrs Vercoe was a wellknown resident of the town and district and the news of her somewhat sudden passing will be received with feelings of the deepest regret by many friends throughout the district. The deceased lady was a native of Luggate, being the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Ylietstra, very old settlers of the Upper Clutha district. After hep marriage, the family lived in Clyde for some years and later came to Alexandra where they occupied a property near the Roaring Meg, later removing to Cromwell and finally to Glendhu Bay, Pembroke. As the result of a fall at her home, the late Mrs , Vercoe suffered severe injuries and had for the !past few weeks been an inmate of the Cromwell Hospital where her death took place on Saturday. With an exceedingly kind and generous nature, and possessed of a pleasant and cheerful manner, the late Mrs Vercoe endeared herself to ail with whom she came in contact. She was highly respected and esteemed by a host of friends made in a lifetime spent in the district. The sympathy of the district is extended to Mr F. E. Vercoe in his sad loss.

MR PETER McRAE The' late Mr Peter Mcßae, whose death occurred at Gore recently, was born at Ettrick in 1873, and was educated at the Millers Flat school. The late Mr Mcßae worked at Millers Flat, Dunedin and Gore, and for five years he farmed at Charlton. He was well known as a capable blade shearer, and up to three years ago he could maintain an average of 100 sheep a day for the season. He was a proficient violinist, and he played at dances between Roxburgh and Mataura. He possessed a strict ear for rhythm. Although self taught, his interpretations were not challenged. Deceased was a keen gardener, and he possessed an artistic taste. Having a quiet and unassuming disposition, he did not take an active part in public affairs. He always had a kind word and a helping hand for anyone in need. Predeceased by his wife three years ago, the late Mr Mcßae is survived by one daughter, Mrs H. J. Horrell (Daisy), of Gore, one son, Mr Clarence Mcßae, of Otama, and two grandchildren.
