FOOTBALL

On Saturday last the Waiau team visited Roxburgh and playeu a friendly match with the Roxburgh club. The match was very well attended and resulted in win for the visitors 14—(i. The team was later entertained at a dinner followed by a dance in the dance hall. OLD BOYS v. PRESENT TEAM Playing with surprising dash and understanding the Coal Creek Old Boys defeated the Present Team in their annual match on Saturday by 6 points to 3. Nothing but praise can be given to the Old Boys, who, although playing under the handicap of one man short, showed that though another year has passed they have lost little of their old form. The

defeated team must blame themselves for their defeat as instead of playing the open game to tire the Old Boys, they elected to keep the game tight, the result being that they were beaten for the ball all day. The game, although hard, was played in fine spirit and was ably controlled by Mr J. H. George.

PARS (By “Fullback.”) Getting a feast of the ball H. Templeton showed he is still an excellent half and on a number of occasions completely fooled the young ’uns. Both J. McPherson and W. Dryden showed the “lads” the way to handle a ball and that they can still play good football. Of the forwards, P. and J. Brady must have been a source of annoyance to the other side and they too showed they can still “turn on the works.”

Suffice it to say all the Old Boys played well and it is hoped the young team will try and adopt some of their tactics next season. Perhaps by then they might agree to have a few of the Old Boys come along to their practices and give them a few hints.
