ROXBURGH ATHENÆUM.
A meeting of the Committee of the above institution was held on Thursday evening last, which was attended by the following members Messrs Burton,; Coop, Davies, J. J. Smith, and Reilly (Secretary). In the absence of the President, Mr Coop acted as Chairman. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed.
Mr Smith proposed and Mr Davies seconded, •« That the instalment £l9 7$ due to the Building Society be paid."—• o'arried, It was also resolved that amount of £5 due the hallkeeper, Mr Davies, be paid ; and that £lO on account be paid Beighton and Co.
There was no business of particular importance transacted, but a conversation took place regarding various things connected with the institution, which does not appear to be in a very flourishing condition, the difficulty experienced in i meeting the periodical payments being ! much felt Messrs Burton and Coop had been specially attentive to the institution's interests during the year, but no regular meetings had qeen held as there was very little business to be done. Mr Burton and Mr Smith stated that them should be a regular system of doing ! things, and with regard to the letting of | the hall it was thought that in the tutor* one should be sufficient for that purpose, who should be furnished with a list of the fixed rates for letting the hall Sotwe had complained of the charges made, but it was absolutely necessary to make these charges in order to mm Were the institattoa free from debt, more liberal terms could be arranged. It would be necessary for the new Committee to curtail the expenditure in every possible way.
Mr Coop was thanked for his services as Chairman, and the Committee having resigned, the public were allowed an opportunity of electing a fresh one.
The aunual meeting was then held, but the public were, as usual at Athenseum Committee election meetings, very poorly represented. Mr Reilly was voted to the chair, and opened the proceedings. The minutes- of last annual meeting were read and'eonfirmed. °
The financial stetement showed the receipts for the paat term to be—Rents, &c, £sl 19s 6d ; Government subsidies (two), £43 8s 5d ; balance from last year, £5 9s 6d—making a total of £IOO 17s 8d The expenditure for the same period amounted to £7O 16s 3d-thus leaving a credit balance of £3O Is sd, The estimated liabilities weieset down at £44 7s 6d. It was also stated that there wa* £3 6s 6d due to the institution on account of library subscriptions. Mr Coop proposed, ''That nine be elected as members of Committee for the ensuing year-five to form a quorum."— This was seconded by Mr Burton and carried.
The following were elected a Committee:—Messrs Burton, Burgess, Coop, Bowden, Hiscock, Reilly, J. J. Smith, Waigth, and Weatherall. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman.
The Committee arranged to meet on Thursday evening next, for the election of officers and general business.
