DUNEDIN TOWN HALL CHIMES.
(Contributed.) The clock in the new Town TUll i* an acquisition of no small importance to tha I citizens. It tells fch«un of the j.nssing of time *nd keeps them, so to speak, up to the time o'day. From every point of | the rapidly extending city its smiling faces | and strong hands can be descried, point- ! ing to the minute and the hour which | may be you wish or dread.—l felt much pleased with the building, and with tha clock, too, until the Bi> cal!ed chiming i commenced. And then I mnst confess j I ivas st&rtle<jL_ I had never heard such jan unearthly noise before. 1 asked a j hy-stander what the noise meant. 41 0 T said he, " that is the town clock chiming. I " Chiming." I replied, 1 thought chiming was a kind of musical sound. "So it is," ejaculated my friend. 44 What finer music could you have than that. Thinking this young fop smells I am from the.country, I addressed myself to a nervous looking old mr»n who, with angry gaze fixed on the dial plate, appeared absorbed in thought concerning it. " Pardon me," I said, " pray wbafc noise is that in the belfry — l4 Chimes,' replied the old man, ft hiss, 41 but I call it an intolerable nuisance; ' and then the old man shook again with nervous agitation, and continued : " Ever since that abominable noise commenced I can't get a night's rest. No sooner do I fall asleep, which of late I have had difficulty in doing, than I am aroused by that— 1 " and here the old man broke down in the attempt to express Lis indignation. 44 1f," he continued, "I were so annoyed by an I could have him punished. But— I could understand the rest, as he gave a significant nod and hobbled away. Not a bad price to pay, I thought,—nearly £2OOO, for an instrument for chiming death notes; for it really has no more music than my Sunday boots.
