State Miners Will Produce Maximum Output

(Per Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, March 21. The Minister of Mines (Hon. P. C. Webb) after conference with the State Miners’ Union executive to-night stated: “I can now advise that the miners will produce the maximum amount of coal that human energy can, I am quite satisfied that unofficial stopwork meetings will have to stop and arrangements will need to be made between the union and the managementto devise a system to prevent spasmodic stoppages. “I understand that the Coal Council will be coming here as soon as possible to investigate any grievances.” Mr. Webb added that he had intimated his intention to come here when the House rises to confer with the management, deputies and union executives with tho hope of evolving a better system of settling differences and working more harmoniously and efficiently than hitherto. He had made a general request to the miners in New Zealand to work extended hours in the winter and a meeting will be held in the State mines to-morrow to discuss Mr. Webb’s recommendations. “I am leaving with the conviction that work will proceed normally and tho ltunanga miners will answer the appeal of the Government to produce the maximum amount of coal,” Mr. Webb concluded.
