May be Prelude to Another Jump in Pacific
NAVAL AND AIR BOMBARDMENT OF MILI Received Tuesday, 8.45 p.m. WASHINGTON, March 21. “Battleships and carrier-based aircraft heavily shelled and bombed Mili atoll on Saturday, ’ ’ says a Pacific Fleet communique. “Army Mitchells bombed Ponape, sinking a small cargo transport and starting large fires. “Navy and Army aircraft bombed five enemy-held atolls in the Eastern Marshalls, hitting gun emplacements, barracks and magazines. All our planes ♦ returned. ’ ’ The Associated Press says the synchronised attack on Mili may be the prelude to an invasion. The 2000-ton submarine rescue ship Macaw sank after striking a coral reef in the Pacific, according to a Navy communique. The vessel was commissioned in July.
