MAKINO The annual meeting was preceded by the usual monthly meeting, .Mrs. W. E. Baker presiding. Competitions resulted: Handkerchief from a salt bag, White 1, Mrs. Thomas 2, Mrs. Jenkins 3; Iceland poppy, Mrs. Mayhew 1, Mrs. Wilton 2, Mrs. Blaekler. Mrs. A. Wilton’s name wil» bo the first to bo inscribed on the shield for most points in the Iceland poppy competition. A written competition was won by Mrs. Jenkins. Birthday greetings were extended to Mesdames A. Wilton, Jenkins and Barber. The programme for April will be a demonstration on ! spinning, three plain scones and an Ice- I land poppy, and the hostesses will be \ Mesdames Allan, Courtney and A. Wilton. [ A letter of appreciation was read from a soldier overseas expressing thanks for the excellent parcel he had received. All reports read showed the same excellent progress that had been made by the various sections of the W. 1., and Mrs. Mason took the chair for the election of officers for the coming year. Mrs. W. E. Baker was re-elected president and the committee were elected en bloc with the addition of ono new member, Mrs. Camplin, who replaces Mrs. Moray, who has resigned. The secretary and treasurer will be elected at the committee meeting. Mesdames Wilton, senr. and Junr., Jenkins and Camplin agreed to pack soldiers’ parcels at the former’s home and they would be grateful for biscuits and flour or sugar bags for packing.
King Peter of Yugoslavia and Princess Alexandra of Greece were married at the Orthodox Chapel of the Yugoslav Embassy, London, on Monday afternoon, states a London cable. King George and Queen Elizabeth were among the guests, who also included King George of Greece, King Haakon of Norway, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, and Prince Bernhard, the Duke of Gloucester, the Duchess of Kent, and Mr. Anthony Eden,. Foreign Secretary. Members of the Willard Homo Board met this month at the home, Mrs. K. McDonald presiding in the unavoidable absence of Mrs. E. C. Barnett. The matron (Mrs. Buckley) reported that the number of Inmates remained at 28, all of whom wore in good health. The annual picnic held at Foxton Beach by the Commercial Travellers’ Association was much enjoyed. A considerable amount of mending and sewing had been done by Mesdames Barnett, McDonald, Watson, Collis, Illston, Grimwood and Miss Kelly, and a vote of thanks was accorded them. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs. Barnett in the illness of her son. It was decided to appoint a new assistant t;» the staff. The secretary (Mrs. Jennings) reported on gardening toolß and furnishings which had been purchased. A letter of appreciation had been sent to the Commercial Travellers’ Association. Members were given an opportunity of inspecting the home and new furnishings.
