The Palmerston North City Council last evening passed motions of sympathy with Mr. F. Jackson in the loss of his wife and Mr. W. L. Fitzherbert in the death of his brother. Both Air. Jackson and Air. Fitzherbert are exmembers of the city council. At the meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board yesterday, the chairman (Air. J. A. Nash) made refer ence to the death on active service of Dr. J. Menzies, who, as house surgeon, had been a member of the board’s staff for twelve months. He naked that the board’s sympathy should be conveyed to Mrs. Menzies, who had been a sister on the staff. Flight-Sergeant R. Wood, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. Wood, of Kowhai Avenue, Palmerston North, has been promoted to tho rank of pilot officer, according to the latest Gazette. Pilot Officer Wood enlisted in the R.N.Z.A.F. in 1941 and left for Canada in 1942. For a period he served with the Coastal Command. Prior to his joining the Air Force, he was a member of the staff of the Central School. Among members of the R.N.Z.A.F. who have been promoted to the rank of wing-commander is Squadron-Leader 11. C. Walker, A.F.C., of Palmerston North. Wing-Commander Walker, who is serving in the Pacific, was recently mentioned in despatches. A former captain of the Manawatu Aero Club, he has had an outstanding career in civil and mili tary aviation, including his notable flight with the late Bquadron-Loader M. O, Ale Gregor in the Alel bourne Centenary Air Race. The Hon. T. D’Alton, High Commissioner for Australia, was a visitor to Palmerston North yesterday and addressed the Rotary Club, lie whs accompanied bv Mrs. D’Alton and his private secretary, Miss Wiggins. The ladies were the guests of Kotaryauns at, morning tea at tho Kosco rooms. After lunch a visit was paid to Massey College where the visitors were met by the principal, Professor G. fcC Perea, and Professor W. Riddet and showu over the college and facilities, the hostels, farm and buildings. Alesdames (}. D. Pattlo and Riddet were the hostesses for the ladies during the day. The party returned to Wellington last evening.
