Jap Attack Breaks Down

Received Sunday, 9.50 p.m. SYDNEY, March 19. The Japanese offensive against the American beachhead at Empress Augusta Bay (Bougainville Island) has broken down. Enemy attacks began on March 8. More than 1100 Japanese dead have been found inside the American lines but the total of enemy casualties is believed to be many times that number. American casualties were proportionately light. Alliod aircraft continue to attack Japanese positions in the neighbourhood of tho beachhead, concentrating against enemy gun positions.
