Canada’s Huge Free Gift to Australia

Received Sunday, 8.45 p.m. (Special Australian Correspondent.) SYDNEY, March 19. Australia’s newest inter-Dominion 1 pact, that with Canada, has been cordially received. Under its provisions Australia will receive goods from Canada to the value of £24,437,000 i yearly as a free gift. Explaining tho new agreement, the Minister of External Affairs, Dr. Evatt, said the United Nations had adopted the larj sighted principle of mutual aid rather ! than the practice of sale and loan between the Allies. Canada’s policy of supply without payment avoided the creation of war debts which would dislocate the flow of trade after the war. The policy was in conformity with that of all the United Nations. Dr. Evatt stressed the fact that by so assisting to maintain high levels of employment and consumption throughout the world, prosperity was increased and expansion of trade effected. This was particularly important to Australia and New Zea land whose export trades represented large proportions of their total incomes. Falls in employment levels in such countries as tho United Kingdom and the United States would have a very detrimental effect on such economies as those of New Zealand and. Australia.
