Widespread German Fear of Russian Invasion
Received Friday,,7 p.m. NEW YORK, March 16. “The Germans’ hope 01 victory has almost disappeared. There is widespread fear of defeat and above all an invasion by the Russian armies which nine out of ten Germans believe will bring Communism to Germany.” This was stated by Ralph Heinz en, chief of the United Press Paris Bureau, who returned aboard the Gripsholm. “Germany,” he added, “never recovered from the staggering defeat at Stalingrad. Hitler’s prestige as a military leader is now at the lowest ebb. No one except the most militant Nazis expects a military victory barring a miracle such as the collapse of the Russian armies or the abandonment of Allied air raids. The Germans are therefore gloomily preparing for a revolution, defeat and inflation. “Compared with France and other occupied countries Germany is still a laud of plenty, but compared with Portugal Germany’s poverty is strikingly evident. However, the shortages do not affect the German army which cats its fill regardless of whether the rest of Europe eats or not,”
