W.I. Garden Circle

Somewhat boisterous weather did not deter between 4U and 50 members of the W.l. garden circle from meeting in the lovely grounds of Mrs. Lyall’a home in Gladstone Street, Woodville, for their annual rneetng on Tuesday. The meeting was a lively one, considerable good-humoured discussion taking place on several points. For so young a circle and' one which changes its officers every year a certain amount of adjustment is quite, to be expected. Mrs. B. Hutchings (president) was in the chair and with her were Mesdames T. A. B. Sinclair (secretary) and W. Eobotham (treasurer). New members welcomed were Mrs. Meech and Miss Agnes Beattie and Misses Nola Oliver, Hilda Seed and Jean Terry in the junior division. Tho W.l. garden circle's badges were received from the manufacturers and each member bought her own. Mrs. T. A. B. Sinclair read the report of tho year’s activities and Mrs. ltobotham read the linancial statement. Mrs. B. Hutchings thanked all for their cooperation. Tributes in tho form of floral shoulder sprays were presented to Mesdames Forbes and Lyall and all retiring officers. Officers I were elected as follows: —Mrs. Terry, president; Mesdames T. A. B. Sinclair and W. Philips, vice-presidents; Mrs. Alex J. Linton, secretary; Miss Nola Oliver, treasurer; committee, Mesdames Bibby, Doggett, Forbes, Giles, Hutchings and Seed. The committee is to meet next Thursday for their lirst aeeting. Competition stewards for the year will be Mesdames Henry and Hutchings, while the stallholders will do Misses Bassett and Squires. Winners of the best bloom competition for last year were Mrs. Lyall lirst with 75pts., Mrs. Terry second 73pts., and Mesdames Nicholl and Whitney equal third with GGpts. Airs. Seed’s trophy for decorative work was won by Airs. Terry. Airs. Bryson presented a “thank you” trophy to ] Mrs. Sinclair. Tho monthly competiI tion was won by Mrs. Worboys, the | best bloom was exhibited by Mrs. Giles, and the best buttonhole was won by Airs. James. Miss Agnes Beattie judged the competitions. Next month’s . decorative competition is a vase of berries and autumn foliage and the | hostesses will be Mesdames Bassett, | Bryson and Bruere. Hostesses for the annual meeting were Mesdames Lyall, | Waltliers, Gardner, McKinlay and tho j junior members Nola, Jean and Hilda. The meeting concluded with Mrs. I Terry, tho new president, thanking Mrs. j Lyall for the use of her beautiful garden and her hospitality.
