(From Our Own Correspondent.) In recent letters from Italy, Mrs. J. B. Stewart had news that her son, Gnr. Don. Stewart, was out of hospital and his leg injuries improving. While hav- ■ ing a spell from front-line duty Gnr. Stewart was playing football and sustained injuries to his shinbone which was chipped. Mrs. Dempster, of Wanganui, is visiting her sister, Mrs. Hotter. A large gathering attended the school swimming sports on Thursday afternoon and enjoyed a programme of events arranged by the school council The pupils have made good progress in their swimming and the events from the life-saving display arranged by Miss Woods to the frolics of the tinies in Miss Osborne’s care kept the large audience entertained all the afternoon. The headmaster, Mr. Simpson, supervised the programme and was assisted by Mr. Woolman and Mr. Wildbore. chairman of the school committee, and helpers. The school is divided into three houses and Bata was well in the lead from Tui with Ivowhai third. Kowhai was unfortunate in that their senior swimmer, C. Malone, was not competing and his absence probably meant the loss of many points for his house. Mr. Wildbore expressed pleasure at the largo gathering present and said ho would be pleased to see another such gathering at the householders’ meeting. Mesdames Wildbore, Hogan, W. Jensen, C. Spence, D. McNicol, Misses Osborne and Woods served afternoon tea which had been provided by the ladies. The school roll remains steady at 92 in the primary department and 12 in the secondary. The school committee at the last’ meeting decided to make a grant of £lO for reference books for the school library. The schoolchildren’s vegetable plots are to be judged this year by Mr. J. B. Pettigrew. Preparations are now being made for the next quota of unaddressed gift parcels from this district.
